Banding: Smart Packaging for a Sustainable Future

Banding: Smart Packaging for a Sustainable Future

In the world of sales packaging and logistics, packaging solutions play a crucial role.

Bundling, an advanced packaging method, offers innovative and sustainable possibilities for various needs.

Let’s take a closer look at what bundling is, how it works, and why it’s a green and customer-friendly packaging choice.

What is Bundling?

Bundling involves wrapping products with a thin band of paper or film. This band serves various functions, such as bundling, securing, sealing, labeling, or advertising at the point of sale.

How Does Bundling Work?

  • A narrow band of paper or film is wrapped around the product.
  • Ultrasound or heat seals the band.
  • The strength of the band can be adjusted to suit the product.

Types of Bundling Machines

  • Stand-alone, inline, and end-of-line machines for various integration possibilities.
  • Sensors for size detection and just-in-time information.
  • Bundles are joined together using hot-wedge or ultrasonic welding.

What is a Banderole?

A banderole is simply a thin strip of paper or film with many functions, such as bundling, securing, sealing, labeling, or advertising.

Printing Banderoles

  • Banderoles can be printed both in advance and just-in-time.
  • Flexographic printing for colorful prints and coatings.

Sustainability of Bundling

  • Minimizes packaging material.
  • Paper banding is recyclable and made from recycled paper.
  • Film bundling with recyclable material, potentially with PCR.

Customer-Friendly Packaging

  • Reduces waste and makes waste separation easy.
  • Easy to open by hand: paper banding can be applied at any point, while film banding is done at the sealing.

Bundling vs. Cardboard Sleeves

On 23.08.2023, the differences between bundling and cardboard sleeves were analyzed based on five criteria:

  1. Tension
    • Cardboard sleeves without tension, loose grip.
    • Bundling with adjustable tension, ultrasonic welding.
  2. Material
    • Cardboard vs. paper or film (PP, HDPE, PLA).
    • Bundles made from various sustainable materials.
  3. Adhesive
    • Cardboard sleeves require glue, adhesives.
    • Bundling without glue, tight band prevents slippage.
  4. Recyclability
    • Cardboard sleeves may contain non-recyclable adhesives.
    • Bundles are recyclable.
  5. Packaging Handling
    • Manual packaging with cardboard sleeves vs. machine bundling

Food Packaging

Food packaging, crucial for protection and transport, can benefit from printed paper and film banderoles:

  • Ideal for image, advertising, and information.
  • Made from certified, food-safe materials.
  • An eco-friendly choice for various applications in the food industry.
